The European Mental Health Foundation was established in early 2023 in Poland as a response to the identified needs of both local and European communities.European society has been deeply affected by social traumas, primarily resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and the escalation of the war in Ukraine, which triggered one of the largest migration waves in modern European history.
The worsening economic crisis, combined with media narratives instilling fear of total war, has led to a level of psychological tension in Europe not seen since the end of World War II.
All of this has placed unprecedented pressure on already overstretched mental health systems, which now face one of the greatest challenges of our time — all while grappling with a severe shortage of specialized organizations.
In response, the European Mental Health Foundation was created with a mission to support and transform the systems of mental health care and prevention, while actively assisting the citizens of the European Union.
One of our key goals is to establish a 24/7 European Mental Health Support Center — a safe, accessible space where individuals in crisis can receive immediate, professional help, regardless of their location, background, or financial situation.
This center will function as a “mental health emergency room,” bridging the gap between long-term psychiatric care and the urgent needs of people facing acute mental distress. It will offer crisis intervention, psychological first aid, and direct referral pathways to specialized support, including hospitalization when necessary.
Our vision includes both an in-person and digital presence — with a dedicated hotline, online consultations, multilingual support, and on-site emergency response teams working hand in hand with local services across the EU.
We believe that no one in emotional crisis should ever be left alone — and that timely support can save lives, reduce suffering, and prevent the long-term consequences of untreated mental health conditions.
Following the change in C-level management, the Foundation has committed to establishing, in the coming years, a fully equipped and purpose-built mental health treatment hospital. This facility will combine a psychiatric hospital and an addiction treatment clinic, along with a 24/7 care center for the elderly and socially excluded individuals.
In line with our mission, we also plan to focus strongly on the development of a dedicated Mental Health Research Center. As originally envisioned, our research will follow a dual track: advancing the scientific understanding of mental health and developing new methods for mental health hygiene and prevention. At the same time, we will educate and train the next generation of mental health professionals by offering opportunities for internships, hands-on experience, and skill development within an academic hospital tailored to their learning needs.
Together, these efforts will create a new standard in mental health care — one that helps people overcome the hardships and traumas of everyday life with dignity, compassion, and expert support.
As of April 2025, we have launched a new strategic approach to mental health research. Our primary focus is on deepening the understanding of schizophrenia and depression, as well as developing effective methods for their prevention and treatment.
Equally important to us are studies on the social adaptation of children and the elderly — including ways to combat exclusion among the sick and aging population. We also investigate the psychological effects and traumas caused by armed conflicts and pandemics, explore the impact of digital addiction, and seek effective treatments for various forms of dependency.
Through our research, we aim to create evidence-based solutions that not only advance mental health care but also strengthen social resilience across generations.
