What a cookie is

A small file a website asks your browser to keep, so that it can recognise something on your next page view — which language you chose, for instance, or that you are signed in.

What this site actually uses

• Language memory — set only if you switch between language versions, so the site does not forget your choice on the next page. Expires after one year. Without it the site still works, it just keeps reverting to the default language.
• Login and editing cookies — set only for the handful of people who log in to edit this site. They are never set for an ordinary visitor.

What this site does not use

• No analytics or visitor statistics of any kind.
• No advertising or remarketing tags.
• No social media pixels, like buttons or embedded feeds.
• No A/B testing, heatmaps or session recording.
• No device fingerprinting and no cross-site tracking.
• No external fonts, maps or video players loading from someone else’s server.

Why you see a notice and not a consent wall

Consent is required for cookies that are not necessary for a service you asked for. We do not set any of those, so there is nothing for you to consent to — we tell you what happens instead of demanding a click.

This will change when the fundraising campaign opens in 2027 and we need a payment provider, and possibly a way to measure whether the campaign is working. On the day that happens, this page will say so and you will be asked for your consent before anything non-essential is set. We will not slip it in.

How to control cookies yourself

Every browser lets you block or delete cookies in its settings, and you can do that for this site specifically. Blocking ours costs you nothing except that the site will keep forgetting which language you preferred.
